The Full Story
Greater Liberty Hill Baptist Church was organized as Liberty Hill Baptist Church in 1930 by the late Rev. O. T. Clopton. The church was located at 126 Hilliard Street, Atlanta, Georgia. Rev. Clopton had a vision of leading other believers in the worship and service of God. 1933 the church was rebuilt and renamed Greater Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Rev. Clopton served as pastor until his death in 1949. From 1949 until 1958, Greater Liberty Hill was pastored by the late Rev. G. W. Lawrence, afterward the late Rev Frank Traylor, and after him, the late Rev. M. L. Ragland. In 1958, the late Rev J. I. McCrary, Sr was chosen to pastor the church. His tenure was faithful as the church grew numerically and spiritually. Greater Liberty Hill relocated to 123 Moreland Avenue Atlanta, Georgia, and grew by adding new members and auxiliaries. In March of 1980, the Moreland Avenue church was destroyed by fire.
The church received an outpouring of love through spiritual and financial support from other churches and organizations during this time. We were blessed to be able to purchase our present building at 1340 Black Oak Drive, SE Atlanta, Georgia. The first service at the current location was held on the first Sunday in April 1980. In May of 1996, the church mortgage was burned and the church was paid in full. October 2005, Rev J. I. McCrary Sr. was called home to be with the lord. the church banned together and kept the faith that God would bless the church with a shepherd to lead God's people. In September 2006, Rev. Curtis Green was called to pastor. Rev. Green served until June 2014. Rev. David Benton served as pastor from February 8, 2015, until February 14, 2021.
Rev. Kilwanda Crawford Young served as interim pastor from February 2021 until June 2022. On June 12, 2022, Rev Samuel Lee White III and Janalene White became the 8th pastor and First Lady to lead Greater Liberty Hill Baptist Church. We are looking forward to all God will do under this new leadership.
